President Droupadi Murmu hails Goa UCC, says good example for the country

Commending the vibrant cosmopolitan ethos of Goa, President Droupadi Murmu expressed her admiration on Tuesday, highlighting the state’s noteworthy embrace of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a testament to its alignment with the constitutional framework. Speaking at a gracious civic reception hosted at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday evening by the state government, President Droupadi Murmu articulated, “Goa’s adoption of the Uniform Civil Code stands as a source of pride. This inclusive code, fostering parity between genders across all communities in Goa, stands as a manifestation of its diverse culture. Aligned with our Constitution’s principles, this code serves as a model for the entire nation.”

In her accolades, the President lauded Goa for its commendable performance with regard to the Sustainable Development Goals, also acknowledging its prominent stature in terms of developmental achievements. She remarked, “Goa’s cosmopolitan fabric has a rich heritage of gender equality. The fact that more than 60 percent of higher education enrollments consist of female students is truly heartening… Nonetheless, there exists a necessity to augment the participation of women within Goa’s workforce.”

Underscoring the imperative of safeguarding the state’s abundant woodland expanse, President Droupadi Murmu stressed the importance of orchestrating endeavors that forge a path to integrating members of tribal communities and other forest inhabitants into the development process, all the while upholding their cultural legacies intact.

In addition to its reputation as a tourist haven, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted that Goa stands as a significant hub for education, commerce, industry, technology, and naval defense.

Extending homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of the nation’s freedom, Murmu reflected, “Just a few days prior, on August 15, we commemorated Independence Day. Against this backdrop, it’s only fitting to recall that every June 18, the entirety of Goa observes ‘Kranti Divas’ or Revolution Day. A seminal moment in this narrative took place during a public assembly in Goa on June 18, 1946, when Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia resounded the clarion call for a revolutionary movement against the prevailing Portuguese domination in the region. Eventually, on December 19, 1961, foreign dominance was vanquished from Goa. It marked the realization of the aspirations harbored by the freedom fighters not just in Goa but across the entire nation.”

Commencing her three-day sojourn in Goa on Tuesday, the President paid her respects at the Martyrs’ Memorial located at Azad Maidan in Panaji, while also personally presenting ‘Sanad’—the land title document—under the purview of the Forest Rights Act to several deserving beneficiaries during the event.
